We started out manufacturing our own products but after 2019-2020, found an increasing demand for onshoring circuit board assembly within the UK.
We split off the assembly side into PCBA LTD in 2022 and have since doubled our manufacturing floor space twice.
In 2024 we moved into our new dedicated 2500sqft facility in Ashbourne, Derbyshire featuring:
In 2024, we invested in a 40-foot container of new equipment to meet rising demand for our SMT services. This expansion allowed us to establish a second SMT line, separating smaller prototype jobs from larger production runs to improve efficiency.
Our main SMT line now features two high-speed pick-and-place machines with a combined capacity of 20,000 components per hour. We have also automated PCB handling with automated loading and unloading systems, plus an automated stencil printer for precise solder paste application. A new 6-zone reflow oven with rail also allows us to do double-sided loads.
Our 2nd line features a single 8-head pick-and-place machine with 6-zone mesh rail oven, ideal for smaller projects that don't warrant the larger setup costs of our main SMT line. This helps us deliver value to our customers who might not run large productions that are more suited for our main SMT line.
This investment has significantly enhanced our SMT capabilities, enabling us to deliver higher-quality assemblies with faster turnaround times for customers who need rapid project completion.
In 2024 we moved into our new 2,500 square foot factory space. This is a brand new industrial unit built just next door to our old unit. This unit features a much larger ground floor space than our previous unit allowing for longer SMT and THT production lines. The addition of running water with a toilet and kitchen area are greatly appreciated. With 200A three-phase electrical service, much more LED lighting and improved insulation, the new facility is much nicer to work in and has the power capacity for our increasing demand for more equipment.
We also upgraded our old pallet-based wave soldering machine to a rail-based machine which has greatly improved our THT throughput. We are now able to take on much larger THT projects and boards with a 400mm wave solder pot. In addition to the wave solder machine, we now have 2 large 3-seater assembly stations for hand placing THT parts. This allows us to set up multiple boards at the same time to do hand assembly of THT parts before they go into the wave solder. Again greatly increasing our THT capabilities.
In 2023 we moved into a newer and larger industrial building, doubling our floor space and adding a mezzanine for storage and extra work area. This expansion was necessitated by our rapid growth throughout 2022–2023, during which we brought on several new clients and larger projects.
We invested in additional equipment including a new 8-head SMT pick-and-place machine (bringing our total to two pick-and-place machines), an old pallet-based wave soldering machine, an automatic optical inspection machine, and significantly more SMT feeders. Our growth also meant we needed the extra room for customer parts and build areas for projects.
We started off originally making our own tools and equipment for the Film/TV industry, primarily focused around electronic equipment to support the camera and lighting departments. Due to the 2019 pandemic and 2020 lockdowns, we saw a demand from other businesses in the UK for PCB assembly services due to the global disruption in trade.
After being contacted by several companies for assembly services, and with the Film/TV industry being put on hold, we pivoted to serve local businesses who were seeking PCB assembly. Later in 2022 we spun off the assembly side of the business into PCBA LTD so we could focus on delivering PCB assembly to UK-based electronics manufacturing firms.
